No Gi (pronounced no ghee) Jiu Jitsu derives from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or BJJ. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), which was brought to Brazil in the early 20th century from the Japanese martial art of Kodokan Judo, which was called Jiu Jitsu before a name change to Judo. No Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (or No Gi BJJ) is a combat sport, martial art, and efficient, effective self-defense system that focuses on ground fighting. The objective is to neutralize and control a much larger opponent with leverage and technique, rather than strength.
In addition to incredibly reliable self-defense, as well as the mental exercise offered, the body workout BJJ gives you is unreal. You will experience increased stamina and improved body tone. It is truly a complete self-defense system and fitness program 'rolled' into one.
Also because of its incredible effectiveness and reliability, BJJ, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, is also practiced by military personnel around the world.
No Gi BJJ began in America with the likes of Cesar Gracie, Chris Brennan, and Eddie Bravo. Chris found while training in Brazil, that when he took the Gi off, the playing field with some of the highest level Brazilian Jiu Jitsu players in the world was suddenly levelled. World renowned MMA fighter Jake Shields proclaims he's only trained in a gi for 4 hours of his life, and has dominated top gi players, including Damien Mia. Click here.
These trail blazing pioneers concluded that No Gi BJJ training exclusively was indeed better for developing muscle memory instincts with regard MMA (Mixed Martial Arts).
Our teaching pedagogy guarantees that those focused on No GI BJJ or MMA training can rely on said muscle memory instincts in the various applications specific to self-defense, BJJ competitions, MMA, or just plain, simple in the gym fun - instincts that are not training clothes specific.
Also, if you want to try Gi, we have Gi classes too! :)
